Adult classes

Community School of the Arts offers six summer classes for adults

• “Watercolor for Adults” will be offered from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, June 3-July 31. This class introduces students to the fundamental techniques of the watercolor medium both in- and out-of-doors. Designed for students at any experience level, lessons will be based on traditional genres including still life and plein air, while incorporating abstract elements such as atmosphere, form and color. Emphasis will be given to the use of brushwork, image size and experimental tools, including sponges, rags and salt. Watercolor technique reference books will be available. Basic materials will be supplied.

• “Oil Painting for Adults” will be offered from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays,   June 3-July 24. This class is for beginning to intermediate level students. No prior oil painting experience is necessary. Students will be painting from life both inside the classroom and out-of-doors. Technical instruction will be provided. Topics include color mixing and various oil painting techniques such as glazing, dry brush, impasto, use of the palette knife and cold wax medium. As students acquire technical skills, individual projects can be developed with the guidance of the instructor. Students may reference historical painters and oil painting technique through provided reference material. Basic materials will be supplied.

• “Ceramics for Adults” will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. (and a second session from 7 to 9 p.m.) June 4-July 9. Students will be introduced to the fundamental techniques and concepts of the ceramic arts. The emphasis will be the exploration of the ceramic medium as a material for creative expression. Functional and sculptural aspects of the medium will be considered through assignments incorporating hand building, wheel throwing, surface treatments and glazing techniques. Fifty pounds of clay and a variety of glazes will be supplied to each student. Basic ceramic tool kits will be available for purchase.

• “Natural Light Photography” will be offered from 9 to 11 a.m. June 5-Aug. 7. This digital based photography class will explore all aspects of natural light photography. Students will learn skills needed to take excellent indoor and outdoor photos with only existing light. The class is perfect for those who are looking to improve their portrait, landscape, or candid photography skills. Students will learn about exposure (as well as several other camera settings), how to avoid harsh shadows, working and interacting with portrait subjects, diffusing existing light for a more flattering image, and how to edit photos with post processing computer software. The class will be interactive and will include moderate walking. Students must bring their own digital camera, but computers and software will be provided.

• “Beginning Piano for Adults ll” is being offered from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. on Tuesdays through July 9. Classes started May 7. Participants in this class are learning how to read music, play chords, and improvise in Indiana State University’s group keyboard lab.

• “Acoustic String Jam Camp” will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon July 8–12 under the direction of Brent McPike and Eric Schatz. This class is for students that play acoustic string instruments, including violin, viola, cello, double bass, mandolin and guitar. Students will learning songs, accompaniment and group performance and improvisation. Each student requires a basic level of proficiency on instrument such as playing a major scale or knowledge of chords. Students must bring their own instruments to class.
