Surf’s up tonight for ‘Deeper Shade of Blue’ at Showplace 12 in Terre Haute

TERRE HAUTE — “A Deeper Shade of Blue” — the story of the evolution of modern surf culture — is coming to Terre Haute for a one-night showing.

The film is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. tonight in Showplace 12 at 3153 S. Third Place.

Tickets are available now at the theater box office and online at

According to a press release: “ ‘A Deeper Shade of Blue’ combines innovative underwater cinematography techniques with a unique narrative structure, to uncover the art of surfing like never before. Adding emotion to the imagery, the film is coupled with a soundtrack featuring Sir Paul McCartney and Youth, Foo Fighters, Coldplay and many others.”

After the presentation of “A Deeper Shade of Blue,” director Jack McCoy will be joined by world-renowned surfing legends Kathy Kohner, (the inspiration for movie and TV’s “Gidget”), Jamie O’Brien, The Marshall Brothers, Derek Hynd, Marti Paradisis, Terry Chung, Jordy Smith, Tom Wegener and Manoa Drollet as they discuss the evolution, the culture and the impact of surfing from its beginnings to today’s billion-dollar-a-year global industry.

The press release further describes the movie: “McCoy, producer of epic surfing films for the last 40 years, has created his most iconic picture yet with ‘A Deeper Shade of Blue,’ which explores the epic nature of the sport; its roots; the history of surfing culture; and the technology of the surfboard.

“It also describes how two female surfers played a largely significant role in surfing’s rise to worldwide fame — Hawaiian Princess Kaiulani, who resurrected surfing in the late 1800s and Malibu surfing legend Kathy Kohner aka ‘Gidget,’ who brought surfing to the masses in the late 1950s.

“The film also features the Queen of Makaha, Rell Sunn, who was the first female lifeguard in Hawaii and started the Women’s Professional Surfing Association.”
