Celebrate dogs (and cats) with the Terre Haute Community Band

TERRE HAUTE — “Gotta Love Dogs” is the final concert of the 2013 summer season for the Terre Haute Community Band. Traditionally, the last concert is a time for the band members to relax and have fun with the music. Various sections of the band will get a chance show off their particular skills. The audience will hear some novelty tunes, and will also have an opportunity to sample free snow cones, courtesy of the THCB board of directors. The free concert begins at 8 p.m. in Fairbanks Park.

Dog lovers in the band won the naming rights for the concert, but those who prefer feline pets selected some specific music, including a medley from Andrew Lloyd Weber’s musical, “Cats.”

Other selections include “The Whistler and His Dog,” a novelty tune by Arthur Pryor, that contains a piccolo solo — and some whistling by the band.

“How Much is that Doggie in the Window?” will feature a very different group: a tuba, euphonium, trumpet, trombone and piccolo, led by singer/conductor Yvonne Newlin.

“Waggery for Woodwinds” shows off most of the woodwind instruments, especially clarinets, saxes and flutes. “Waggery” is an odd and old word which means “mischievous merriment.”

Camille Saint-Saens, who composed “The Carnival of the Animals,” thought the piece was too frivolous and would damage his reputation, but children and adults alike can enjoy the stately theme of “The March of the Lions,” the ponderous low-brass “Elephant,” the clacking bones of “The Fossils” and the grand finale.

The band’s tuba section — Allen Keathley, Buck Harrold and Michael Livingston — is highlighted in “Tuba Tiger Rag.” This arrangement by Luther Henderson, written for the Canadian Brass ensemble, also features a piccolo trumpet part, played by Steve Steppe. Those who enjoy marches will be pleased that Steve Humphrey, THCB percussionist, will conduct “Repasz Band,” and that John Philip Sousa will be represented with “Solid Men to the Front.”

Leroy Anderson’s “Bugler’s Holiday” will feature Jim Chesterson, Ron Dunbar and Steppe performing the very lively and fast trumpet trio.

“Bear Dance,” “The Walking Frog” and “Beauty and the Beast” complete this playlist inspired by the animal kingdom.

“As the season comes to a close,” the band said in a press release, “it is important to once again thank Arts Illiana, the Indiana Arts Commission, the Wabash Valley Community Foundation and the city of Terre Haute for their grants, which make it possible to bring free, live band performances to the public. The band is also appreciative of support from the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department.”
