Video tour features attractions on National Road in Illinois

The Historic National Road, one of seven byways in the state of Illinois, rose from dust and prairie grass to become the blueprint for an ocean-to-ocean highway, also known as U.S. Route 40. Regardless of how travelers identified it, its place in history remained constant: It was the road that built a nation.

The National Road Association of Illinois encourages the community to travel the 164 miles of the Historic National Road, stretching from Marshall, Ill., to East Saint Louis, Ill.

Whether traveling in one day or several days, one can find many historic locations to visit. Those interested can watch a video tour of the activities available at www.youtube.com/channel/UCzxY7PP1W5xlW_m46StW9FQ.

Communities along the road offer shops, restaurants, parks, museums and friendly people. Additional sites to stop at along the way include the World’s Largest Wind Chimes, Golf Tee, Knitting Needles and Crochet Hook in Casey; Greenup’s covered bridge, designed by Thomas Jefferson; The World’s Largest Catsup Bottle, in Collinsville; and Illinois’ oldest capitol building in Vandalia.

Individuals can plan their trips through the road at EnjoyIllinois.com. For more historical information on the National Road visit the National Road Association of Illinois website at www.NationalRoad.org or call 888-268-0042.
