CHARLESTON, Ill. —
The Tarble Arts Center at Eastern Illinois University is offering three intensive art workshops for adults (ages 15 and over) in August.
The workshops may be taken for Continuing Education Units for teacher recertification. Online class registration is available through the Tarble website, www.eiu.edu/tarble, by clicking on the Education & Outreach link on the homepage. The deadline to register is July 31.
“Decorative Clay Tile Workshop” will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 5, 2 and 19.
Workshop participants will draw inspiration from Native American masks and then design a decorative clay tile. Students will learn how to use basic hand building tools and techniques to execute their composition in relief using layers of red stoneware and porcelain. Fundamental decorative and finishing techniques will also be applied. Cost is $50 for Tarble members and $60 for nonmembers.
“Introduction to Oil Painting,” led by Natalie Boyer, is scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 6-20, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Participants will create two paintings using oil paint.
A variety of beginning techniques will be explored and for those with some prior experience, new techniques will be explored. Topics include color mixing and relationships, opacity and transparency of paint, palette knife painting, and others. Cost is $75 for members and $90 for nonmembers.
“Introduction to Soft Pastels” will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 7 and 14. This workshop will be a general introduction to working with soft (chalk) pastels. Topics to be covered include arranging a composition, additive and subtractive techniques, color and developing personal subject matter. Cost is $36 for members and $44 for non-members. Class fees include a set of pastels for each participant.
