Band to continue patriotic performances July 6

TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute Community Band will continue its patriotic performances with “Variations on America” at 8 p.m. Saturday in Fairbanks Park.

A principal piece, “1812 Solemn Overture” by Peter I. Tschaikovsky, was written to commemorate Russia’s defense of its motherland against Napoleon’s invasion of Grande Armee in 1812. However, the song has been co-opted as a patriotic hymn played in the United States on the Fourth of July and other patriotic celebrations. The overture is best known for its climactic volley of cannon fire, ringing chimes and brass fanfare finale.

This year is the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, a three-day battle with the most casualties in the American Civil War and often described as the war’s turning point.

“Gettysburg: The Third Day” re-enacts the actual chronological events and portrays the human experience and tragedy of the event.
