Terre Haute Community Band to kick off season

The Terre Haute Community Band begins the 2014 season of free concerts at 8 p.m. Saturday with “By the Light of the Silvery Moon” in Fairbanks Park by remembering some of their own — musicians who made an impact on our community during their lives.

Music symbolic of their interests and personal favorites will be performed in this tribute to their legacy.

The band will also play melodies about love and romance to recognize members of the audience who have celebrated many years of marriage. In case of rain the concert will take place in the YMCA building in Fairbanks Park.

The local musicians we are remembering are persons who had close ties to the Terre Haute Community Band. Harry Gee taught flute, clarinet and saxophone during his tenure at ISU and played all three instruments with the Terre Haute Community Band. He performed with the THCB through the 2012 concert season.

Steve Humphrey was band director at Terre Haute South Vigo High School and later accepted a similar position at Honey Creek Middle School. He was in charge of the band’s percussion section and a member of the board of directors of the THCB where he took on many jobs and projects besides offering wise counsel and insights into board business.

George Graesch did not perform with the THCB, but he taught many of the performers in the band during his 31 years as the director of bands and coordinator of music for the Wind Division at ISU.

“Big Band Signatures” will recall some of the tunes Graesch played with the swing band Men of Note and Claudia. The band will perform an original composition by Gee, “March Wabash.” Humphrey claimed the “Repasz Band March” as the Humphrey family march, having played it at family memorials through the years.

Melodies of love will definitely be in the air as the band performs Elsa’s Processional to the Cathedral, an excerpt from Lohengrin, a Romantic opera in three acts composed and written by Richard Wagner. The concert includes the popular “West Side Story” with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

A Trumpeter’s Lullaby is a two-and-one-half-minute composition for solo trumpet and orchestra, written by Leroy Anderson. James Chesterson will play the trumpet solo and dedicate it to Gary Turner who was head of the music department at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Yvonne Newlin will once again take the podium as she begins her 11th year as principal conductor of the Terre Haute Community Band. She expressed her appreciation to Arts Illiana, the Indiana Arts Commission, the City of Terre Haute, Bemis Co. Foundation and Wabash Valley Community Foundation for grants that support the programs and activities of the THCB Inc.
