‘100 Midwest Artists’ at Swope May 30-Aug. 23

TERRE HAUTE — This summer, the Swope Art Museum will exhibit works by artists who represent Indiana in the 2012 book, “100 Artists of the Midwest” by E. Ashley Rooney (Schiffer Publishing). “100 Midwest Artists: Indiana” opens Friday and continues through Aug. 23.

On view in the museum’s Education Gallery and made possible by Baesler’s Market, the exhibition features Hoosier artists James Wille Faust, Gayla Hodson, Abbigail Knowlton Israelsen, Mike Kelly, Kenneth G. Ryden and Stephanie Standish.

For the publication “100 Midwest Artists,” Rooney focused on artists living in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin, taking “a fresh look at the magical and insightful ways in which the region’s artists have interpreted life in this region with its flourishing cities, rolling corn fields and beautiful countryside.”

The Indiana artists whose work is presented in the related Swope Art Museum exhibition work in diverse media and styles. Faust’s abstract paintings are inspired by the White River, changing light conditions on the water, and trees and birds. Hodson depicts both nature and the built environment in her colorful paintings while Kelly focuses on the open woods, fields and rivers of Northern Indiana in his pastel landscapes. Hallucinations, fairy tales and creation stories are the foundation of Knowlton Israelsen’s imaginative works on paper. Sculptor Ryden makes both large scale public art and smaller works, presenting important historical or archetypal figures, as well as depictions of the natural world. Standish, a resident of Terre Haute until recently, makes drawings that examine the use of patriotic themes in consumer items. These six artists represent the richness of artistic talent to be found in the state.

Swope Art Museum is at 25 S. Seventh St. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.Tuesday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free. For more information call 812-238-1676 or visit
