Community Theatre presents free reading of ‘8: The Play’

TERRE HAUTE — Community Theatre of Terre will present “8” today through Sunday on the main stage of its theater at 1431 S. 25th St.

Directed by Ed Browne, this readers-theater play is a look inside the trial of Perry v. Schwarzenegger, the federal court case for marriage of homosexual couples. The play is named after Proposition 8, the initiative that took away the right for homosexual couples to marry in California in 2008. It was written by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, who also wrote “Milk” and “J. Edgar.” Admission is free.

The play centers around two couples, one portrayed by Marie Wimsett and Megan Stevens and the other by Todd Berry and Mike Mitchell. The reading includes actual testimony from the 13-day trial conducted in 2010, in addition to interviews with the people involved.

“8” requires a large cast. Other participants include Grant Abernathy, Courtney Dosch, Amy Freeze, Tom Hakeem, Nathan Lewis-Cole, Mick Mack, Maury Miller, David Nichols, Greg Otto, Trevor Ramsey, Brandi Reynolds, Will Rupert, Doug Sloan, Josh Tucker, Neil Ward, Pat Wheeler and Amber Wigington.

Audiences are invited to stay for discussions with cast members after each performance.

On Thursday, Ward, a widower, will tell his personal story from the front line of activism.

On Friday, Stevens and Reynolds, who work in the Psychology Department at the Federal Bureau of Prisons, will discuss the history of homosexuality being treated as a mental illness.

On Saturday, attorney Berry will tell about his activism on local, state and national levels.

And on Sunday, Sloan will share his knowledge of the fight for legal equality and specific cases mentioned in “8.” He is a member of the first church in the Terre Haute area to openly accept homosexual members.

Thursday through Saturday performances begin at 8 p.m., with the Sunday  matinee starting at 2:30 p.m. Doors will open a half hour before performance time, and there will be no tickets or assigned seats issued.
