‘Ducks on the Wabash’ set for Oct. 19

Indiana State University’s Nonprofit Leadership Alliance student club is partnering with Heinl’s Flower Shop and Vonda’s Garden Studio to host “Ducks on the Wabash” rubber duck derby on Oct. 19 at Fairbanks Park.

The event will take place at noon on the Wabash River in conjunction with the 2013 Year of the River. The top five finishers will be able to choose from five prizes, including an airboat ride for eight from Joe’s Airboats or a piece of art from local artists.

Ducks can be purchased through Oct. 16 from an NLA student club member, at Heinl’s Flower Shop at Seventh and Walnut streets or at the Vigo County Library Learning Day on Saturday. Order forms and payment may also be sent to: Nathan A. Schaumleffel, Arena C-09, Indiana State University, Terre Haute IN, 47809. All checks should be made to Indiana State University.

Ducks can be purchased for $5. Other purchasing levels are available and can be found at www.indstate.edu/

Proceeds from the event will help send Indiana State University NLA student club members to attend the Alliance Management/Leadership Institute in January.

Heinl’s owner Vonda Monts said that the flower shop wanted to make a contribution to the community in honor of the business’ 150th anniversary. By sponsoring an event that will help send Indiana State NLA students to the national institute, they are helping multiple nonprofit organizations in the Wabash Valley, she said.

Ducks on the Wabash has been sanctioned by the Indiana Gaming Commission’s Charitable Gaming Division.

The Nonprofit Leadership Alliance is a national alliance of colleges, universities and nonprofit organizations dedicated to educating, preparing and certifying professionals to strengthen and lead nonprofit organizations.

The NLA chapter at Indiana State serves a variety of nonprofit organizations throughout the Wabash Valley through volunteer service and internships. It was named the 2013 Nonprofit Leadership Alliance Sprint Campus Partner of the Year.
