Symphony welcomes young virtuoso Sept. 28

The Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra will perform its season-opening concert in Indiana State University’s Tilson Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The concert will feature 17-year-old violin prodigy Stephen Kim, who appeared first in Terre Haute two years ago. Since then he has experienced repeated triumphs around the country as a young prodigy. He will play Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 during the concert and will also visit schools and give master classes in Terre Haute.

Also on the program is Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s “The Flight of the Bumblebee,” the familiar orchestral interlude he wrote for his opera “The Tale of Tsar Saltan.” The piece was written to musically illustrate the magical transformation of the tsar’s son into an insect so he can fly away to see his father. The piece is played at such a fast tempo that it brings to mind the wings of a bee moving so quickly that you can’t see them. Rounding out the evening’s repertoire is Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 2, a powerful tour-de-force that features virtuoso playing by the string section.

Prior to the concert, audience members can attend Concert Conversations with David Bowden, music director, in the Heritage Ballroom. The free talk begins at 6:45 and will include a conversation with Kim and highlights of what to listen and watch for during the concert.

A free “Family Time” concert for children of all ages will be presented from 2 to 2:30 p.m. during the Saturday dress rehearsal in Tilson Auditorium. No tickets or reservations required for this event, which gives children a taste of orchestral music without requiring them to sit through a full concert.

Concert tickets can be purchased at www.hulmancenter.org, www.ticketmaster.com or by calling1-800-745-3000. Prices are $20 for adults and begin at $5 for K-college youth/students.

The Tilson Auditorium accessible drop-off location is at Seventh Street and Larry Bird Avenue. Accessible seats are sold with one free companion seat and are available through the Hulman Center Ticket Office at 812-237-3737. Discounted group rates are available for groups of 10 or more also by calling the Hulman Center Ticket Office.

Established in 1926, the Terre Haute Symphony is the oldest professional orchestra in Indiana. Each year, THSO offers the community five concerts in many different styles.
