‘Boeing Boeing,’ a non-stop comedy, plays at Shawnee Theatre

BLOOMFIELD — Shawnee Summer Theatre of Greene County will continue its 54th season with “Boeing Boeing,” a comedy about an architect who juggles three flight attendant fiancées with the help of his long-suffering housekeeper and best friend.

It’s the 1960s in this Tony Award-winning farce, and swinging bachelor Bernard couldn’t be happier. He has a flat in Paris and three gorgeous stewardesses all engaged to him without knowing about each other.

But Bernard’s perfect life gets bumpy when his friend Robert comes to stay and a new and speedier Boeing jet throws off all of his careful planning. Soon, all three stewardesses are in town simultaneously, timid Robert is forgetting which lies to tell to whom, and catastrophe looms.

A riotous farce that recently enjoyed hit revivals in London and New York, “Boeing Boeing” is set to arrive today at the theater in Bloomfield.

The cast features veteran Shawnee actor Andrew Gehrlein as Bernard and veteran Heather Lawler as Gretchen with Shawnee newcomers Mitch Brauer as Robert, Melissa Griffith as Gloria, Kayleigh Greenwood as Gabriella and Julie Dixon as Berthe. Rebecca Calkin, Shawnee Theatre’s associate producing artistic director, will direct the play.

“‘Boeing Boeing’ was recently revived on Broadway in a Tony-winning production in 2008, and we are thrilled to be bringing it to the community surrounding Shawnee Theatre,” said Calkin. “Set in the 1960s, this show is cool and sexy, while also being zany, wacky and uproariously funny. Bernard, his friend Robert, and his French maid Berthe, do their best to make sure that none of Bernard’s three air hostess fianceés, a German, an Italian and an American, find out about each other. As one woman exits, another woman enters. As one departs, another arrives.”

“Boeing Boeing” runs today through Sunday with performances at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $14 for adults and $7 for children.

Shawnee Theatre is on U.S. 231, just south of Bloomfield. Call 812-384-3559 or visit for more information.
