Final Fridays: Lunes Domingo at Verve

TERRE HAUTE — Lunes Domingo returns to the Verve this Friday with special guests The Brown James.

The show starts at 10 p.m. Admission is $3.

A Terre Haute musical collective organized by Tim Doyle, Lunes Domingo is rooted in the Verve’s two-year-old Monday Jazz Jam. Lunes Domingo’s set list draws from many traditions, though. Their January show featured an instrumental romp by Frank Zappa, Yearbook Committee’s folksy ballads, fresh takes on Johnny Cash, original jams and tunes from the Great American Songbook.

Lunes Domingo will perform at the Verve on the Final Friday of each month in 2014, with a rotating cast of guest musicians.

The core group is formed by guitarist Doyle, drummer Al Doti, Eric Schatz on bass and keyboards, bassist John Ford and drummer Tom Whiteman.

Musical versatility was evident during the inaugural Lunes Domingo show at the Verve on Jan. 31, titled “Tales From The Notebook.” Most musicians alternated between instruments and sang at some point.

“I’ve been writing song ideas in my notebook for over a year now,” Doyle said, “thinking of music projects that I’ve been part of in Austin and Chicago, and laying the groundwork for what has become Lunes Domingo.

“There are so many talented, community minded musicians here in Terre Haute. I’m excited for us to all be on this path together,” he said.

Asked about the meaning of the group’s name, Doyle referred to his filing system: “Eric, Al and I got together most Sunday nights last year to work through ideas for Monday’s Jazz Jam at the Verve. When it came time to name this project, I got my file and started playing with words related to it. Sunday and Monday — Domingo and Lunes, in Spanish. Of course, others see meaning beyond my rather literal exercise.”

Friday’s show will open with an instrumental set by Lunes Domingo. Faba and Johnny DuJour of The Brown James will join Lunes Domingo for the second set, which promises high-energy, hip hop-infused funky grooves.
