Sinfonietta Pops Orchestra helps us find love in songs

TERRE HAUTE — What are the greatest romantic songs of the 20th century? Many people would include “As Time Goes By” from the movie “Casablanca” on their Top 10 lists. The Sinfonietta Pops Orchestra has chosen it for the opening number in its concert, “Love Is a Song,” to be presented at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Cecilian Auditorium at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.

Tom McClanahan, news anchor for WTWO and WAWV, is narrator for this concert. A native of Sullivan County, McClanahan has experienced duties including news photographer, feature reporter, sports director and advertising account executive during his stint with Channel 2. Over the years, he has emceed news and social events, interviewed countless newsmakers and celebrities and has covered events throughout the Wabash Valley.

In this special performance, music director James Chesterson will exchange his baton for the flugelhorn to play the song “Embraceable You,” as assistant conductor Rodney Foster conducts the orchestra. The flugelhorn is a brass instrument that has a wider conical bore than the trumpet or cornet and produces a more mellow sound.

Several other members of the orchestra also will be heard in solo parts. Kurt Baer, a doctoral candidate in ethno-musicology at Indiana University, will perform the alto saxophone solo in “As Time Goes By.” Bill Heinrich, principal trombone, will play the featured solo for “Misty.” Barbara Cooper on piccolo and Brook Steppe on oboe will play solo parts in the medley “Patriotic Melodies That Stirred Our Nation,” a selection chosen to remember Presidents Day.

It’s hard to believe that such a great love song as “The Man I Love” by George Gershwin could have failed to be included in not one but two Broadway shows. It was cut from the 1924 show, “Lady, Be Good,” and the 1927 “Strike Up the Band.” As with many standards of the era, the song became more famous as an independent popular song than as one from a Broadway musical.

Tickets for the concert are $10 for adults, $5 for students. Children under age 10 can attend free.

Grants from Arts Illiana, the Indiana Arts Commission, the Wabash Valley Community Foundation and the City of Terre Haute make it possible to bring live orchestra performances to the public.
