Rockville Rotary to host Jan. 25 ‘Striking Out Polio’ bowling fundraiser

The Rockville Rotary Club is planning a “Striking Out Polio” bowling event from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Thirty-Six Saloon banquet room in Rockville.

The Club is participating locally in Rotary’s international effort to eradicate the crippling disease worldwide by pledging to raise $1,000 to contribute toward the $355-million challenge grant from the Gates Foundation.

Using inflatable bowling pins and balls, the club will give participants a chance ($5 for three rolls to get a strike) to not only contribute toward the polio eradication effort, but also win several prizes. Instant winners receive $3 discount coupons good at the Thirty-Six Saloon and through a drawing a chance to win Cincinnati Reds tickets for the upcoming season, tickets to Beef and Board’s, a portrait package as well as other awards.

Age-appropriate prizes will be given to all children who bowl.

Since 1985, Rotary has contributed nearly $1.2 billion and countless hours to the protection of more than two billion children in 122 countries. The disease remains endemic in only three countries: Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan.

“Rockville Rotary Club is working to end polio to help the world be healthier,” said the local event chair Janean dePlanty.

Rotary is a global humanitarian organization with more than 1.2 million members in 34,000 Rotary Clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.

Rotary members are men and women who are business, professional and community leaders with a shared commitment to make the world a better place through humanitarian service.
