Korean War weekend coming to Fort Harrison State Park July 12-13

The Museum of 20th Century Warfare and the staff at Fort Harrison State Park will honor Korean War veterans with Korean War exhibits on Saturday and Sunday at the museum. The exhibit and the museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days.

A lecture featuring Task Force Smith will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. on Sunday at the Fort Harrison Visitor Center. The force fought against the North Koreans in July 1950 during the opening days of the Korean War. Task Force Smith was made up of elements of the U.S. Army 24th Division and the 52nd Field Artillery Battalion. Almost half of the group was lost in action between July 2 and 6, 1950.

The Korean War was fought on the Korean peninsula between 1950 and 1953. Fort Harrison Military Reservation was a major training site for the U.S. Army from 1906 to 1996. Fort Harrison played a large role in readying soldiers for the Army for service during the Korean War. This July marks the war’s 64th anniversary.

There is no cost to attend the program or visit the museum, but the normal vehicle gate fee applies. Fort Harrison State Park is at the corner of 59th Street and Post Road in Indianapolis. The Museum of 20th Century Warfare is in Building 711 within Fort Harrison State Park, and is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays to Sundays. For more information contact the visitor’s center at 317-591-0122.
