White Violet Center plans Feb. 8 Nuno felting class

People in the felting mood are in luck as White Violet Center Farm Alpacas, a ministry of the Sisters of Providence, has scheduled a Nuno Felting class for Feb. 8.

The class will take place from 1-5 p.m., at White Violet Center for Eco-Justice at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.

Those taking part in the event will be felting a scarf.

White Violet Center for Eco-Justice Garden Manager/Fiber Projects Coordinator Candace Minster said this is the first time the facility has hosted a Nuno felting event.

“We thought we’d try something different,” Minster said. “We thought we’d try to offer a new technique.”

Minster said Debby Green, of Marshall, Ill., will instruct the workshop. Green works at the Forsythe Family Farms Alpacas and specializes in the technique.

“Nuno felting is a special kind of felting that uses a fine silk cloth,” Minster said, “and felting animal fibers on top of that.”

While Minster said wool fiber is typically used in Nuno felting, those participating in the Feb. 8 workshop will use alpaca fiber.

“Alpaca fiber makes a really nice combination (when applying on a scarf),” Minster said. “It’s very lightweight and it adds to the silky feel of the final fabric.”

No felting experience is necessary to attend. Cost is $65, which includes all materials.

The workshop is open to a limited number of people. The deadline to register is Friday.
