‘Rewritten by Machine’ through March 21 at ISU gallery

“Rewritten by Machine and New Technology,” an introduction to the history of video art and its contemporary tendencies, will be on exhibit Feb. 17 through March 21 in University Art Gallery in the Landini Center for Performing and Fine Arts at Indiana State University.

A reception is scheduled 4 to 6 p.m. Feb. 21 and a lecture by Hiraki Sawa is set for 5:30 p.m. March 20.

In addition to Sawa, the exhibition includes work by internationally acclaimed artists Mark Amerika, Stephanie Barber, Dara Birnbaum, Dan Graham, David Hall, Gary Hill, Joan Jonas, Michael Takeo Magruder, Nam Jun Paik, Semiconductor (Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt) and Bill Viola.

These artists use video to explore a range of concepts, among them: childhood memories and identity, the relationship of works and electronic images, scientific visualizations and the limit of human knowledge, media criticism, and digital formalism. Works date from 1971 to 2011.

The exhibition includes 12 single channel videos and two recent mixed media installations — “The Psychedelic Gedankenexperiment” by Hill and “insuranceAES256,” a real-time project by Magruder; and Excerpts from Amerika’s “Immobilite,” the world’s first feature-length art film for a mobile phone, will also be on display.
