‘An Evening of Romantic Music’ Feb. 22 with the Terre Haute Symphony

The Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra’s next concert coincides with Valentine’s Day weekend so music director Dr. David Bowden has put together “An Evening of Romantic Music.”

Denise Gamez, guest vocalist, will perform a medley of songs including “Can’t Help Loving Dat Man,” “I Hate Men,” and “The Man I Love” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in ISU’s Tilson Auditorium. The program will include Gershwin’s Overture to Girl Crazy and, perhaps, the most romantic piece ever written, Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2.

Rachmaninoff’s Symphony is the source of the beautiful melody, “Never gonna fall in love again,” which is even richer and more emotional in the Rachmaninoff original. Gamez’s mezzo-soprano voice is perfect for even more love songs by Saint-Saëns, Offenbach and Mahler, and her performance will begin with Offenbach’s toe-tapping “Can-Can” from Orpheus.

Prior to the concert, audience members can attend Concert Conversations with Bowden in the Heritage Ballroom. The free talk begins at 6:45 and will include a discussion with Gamez about what’s interesting and unique about the music of the evening. “Learning about the music prior to hearing it really enhances the experience,” Bowden explained.

A free “Family Time” concert for children of all ages will be presented from 2 to 2:30 p.m. during the Saturday dress rehearsal in Tilson Auditorium. No tickets or reservations are required for this event, which offers children the opportunity to experience the power and beauty of a live symphonic performance in a family-friendly environment.

Concert tickets can be purchased at hulmancenter.org, ticketmaster.com or by calling 800-745-3000. Prices begin as low as $5 for preschool through college students and $20 for adults.

Discounted group rates are available for groups of 10 or more by calling the Hulman Center ticket office at 812-237-3737.

The Tilson Auditorium accessible drop-off location is at Seventh Street and Larry Bird Avenue. Accessible seats are sold with one free companion seat and are available through the Hulman Center ticket office.
