River City, Library feature Clinton photographer’s work in August

TERRE HAUTE — River City Art Association and the Vigo County Public Library are displaying work by Clinton photographer Spencer Young through August in the library at Seventh and Poplar streets.

Young grew up in the Chicago suburb of LaGrange, Ill. In high school, photography was his main hobby and first job. He was a photographer on his high school yearbook staff for four years and worked part time as darkroom assistant for a local press photographer.

Young studied astronomy, earning a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University and a master’s degree from Iowa State University. He worked summers for several local photographers.

By the early 1970s it became obvious that no jobs were to be had in astronomy, so Young fell back on what he calls his only marketable skill, working several years for a portrait and wedding studio.

Not wanting to make a career of this, he taught himself geology in his spare time, with the intention of entering the coal business.

Then, for 22 years he worked as a geologist for a series of small coal mining companies and one stone quarry. During this time he had no access to a darkroom, and his creative output was mostly limited to travel slides.

Young found himself comfortably retired when the coal company he was working for was sold.

Since retiring, he has become a full-time amateur landscape photographer, printing digitally (His artistic hero is Ansel Adams.). He has indulged his twin interests in astronomy and travel by going on group tours to view astronomical events.

His trips include: seeing the total solar eclipses in Indonesia in 1983, the Caribbean Sea in 1998, Turkey in 1999 and 2006, West China in 2008, Tahiti in 2010 and Australia in 2012 and viewing the transits of Venus on the Greek Islands in 2004 and in Central Asia in 2012.

Prospective RCAA members are invited to attend meetings on the second Tuesday of each month in the community room of the Vigo County Public Library.

For more information, visit www.rivercityart.org or contact RCAA president Todd Stokes at 812-232-0048.
