Experience ‘America’s Music’ through film, fiddles

MARSHALL, ILL. — “America’s Music: A Film History of Our Popular Music from Blues to Bluegrass to Broadway” will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 21 at Marshall Public Library, 612 Archer Ave., in Marshall, Ill.

The “America’s Music” program focuses on six genres of music that are considered uniquely American: blues and gospel, Broadway, jazz and swing, bluegrass and country, rock ’n’ roll, and Latino and hip hop.

Programs in each musical genre will be presented at six public libraries in east-central Illinois.

The Marshall Library has been chosen to feature the country and bluegrass genre.

Patricia Poulter, associate dean of the College of Arts and Humanities and a professor of music at Eastern Illinois University, will introduce and lead discussion about the film “High Lonesome: The Story of Bluegrass Music.” The evening also will include a short musical performance.

Admission is free. For information or to reserve a seat, call the library at 217-826-2535.

The “America’s Music” program is sponsored in part by Eastern Illinois University, College of Arts and Humanities, Booth Library, Doudna Fine Arts Center and the Coles County Arts Council.

It is a project of the Tribeca Film Institute, in collaboration with the American Library Association, Tribeca Flashpoint and the Society for American Music.

It has been made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the Human Endeavor.
