Shawnee Summer Theatre to open ‘The Woman in Black’ tonight

BLOOMFIELD — Shawnee Summer Theatre of Greene County will continue its 54th Season with “The Woman in Black.”

In the play, a lawyer hires an actor to tutor him in recounting to family and friends a story that has long troubled him concerning events that transpired when he attended the funeral of an elderly recluse. There he caught sight of the Woman in Black, the mere mention of whom terrifies the locals, for she is a specter who haunts the neighborhood where her illegitimate child was accidentally killed. Those who see her face dire and deathly consequences. The lawyer has invited some friends to watch as he and the actor recreate the events of that dark and stormy night.

The cast features Brandt Roberts as Actor and Bryson David Hoff as Kipps. Rebecca Calkin will direct the play.

“‘The Woman in Black’ is a thrilling show, filled with intrigue, mystery and suspense,” said Calkin, Shawnee Theatre’s associate producing artistic director. “The frights don’t come from blood and gore; they come from the audience’s imagination. The complexity in the lighting and sound effects will amplify the tension and leave the audience questioning what they have seen and heard.”

“The Woman in Black” can be seen at 8 p.m. today through Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $14 for adults and $7 for children.

Shawnee Theatre is on U.S. 231, just south of Bloomfield. Call 812-384-3559 or visit www.shawneetheatre.org for tickets.
