Celebrate the Fourth with music and fireworks at Fairbanks Park

The Fourth of July in Fairbanks Park, sponsored by the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department, will be a celebration for the whole family. Activities will begin at 8 p.m. with the presentation of the national colors by Krietenstein American Legion Post 104.

The Terre Haute Community Band will then present “America,” a concert of traditional patriotic songs. Mayor Duke Bennett will get the evening off to a start as he conducts the band in a rousing march number. The band will play until the evening is dark enough to enjoy the traditional fireworks display.

A march with a specifically local background is the “7th Fleet Band” written by Harold Ellshoff, long-time band director of the Marshall, Ill., City Band and a member of the Terre Haute Community Band. The march was arranged by Malinda Zenor, a native of Bainbridge and a resident and music teacher for many years in Montgomery County. Also with an Indiana connection is the march “The Chimes of Liberty,” composed by Edwin Franko Goldman who spent several years during his childhood in Terre Haute.

Veterans and current members of all branches of the U.S. military services will be recognized with “their” song as part of the “Armed Forces Salute.” John Philip Sousa, America’s March King will be well represented with “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” “Semper Fidelis,” “Fugue on Yankee Doodle” and “Washington Post March.”

For a change of pace, the band will play “Homefront: Musical Memories from World War II.” Music was an important part of the war effort for both the civilian and military populations in World War II, and for those who remember that era, those memories are often recalled through the songs that were so popular and meaningful at the time. In a similar vein is “American Salute” by Morton Gould, which includes some fun tunes such as “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree” and “Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition.”

Yvonne Newlin is returning from a brief leave of absence to resume her duties as principal conductor for the band.
