River City group features Todd Stokes through May

TERRE HAUTE — River City Art Association and the Vigo County Public Library are highlighting artwork by Todd Stokes throughout May in the library at Seventh and Poplar streets.

Stokes was born in Evansville but grew up in Terre Haute. He is a 1983 honor graduate of Indiana State University’s School of Fine Arts with a bachelor’s degree in fine art photography and a minor emphasis in Plexiglas sculpture.

His early interests in subject matter revolved around architecture with the underlying geometric forms and hard-edged shadows dominating his creative drive, Stokes said. In the evolution of his work, the subject matter shifted from cityscape to landscape — specifically to trees and their relationship to the surrounding world and the human characteristics they seem to possess.

Stokes not only finds an expressive outlet with photography, he also enjoys creating two- and three-dimensional etched glass pieces.

Just last weekend, Stokes added two red ribbons to his list of awards for his artwork in both mediums.

His color image, “Front and Center,” took second place in the Photography category at the Wabash Valley Art Guild’s 37th Annual Spring Art Show in Clabber Girl Museum and Art Gallery in Terre Haute. David Erickson, juror and retired professor of art from Indiana State University, also selected Stokes’ 3-D etched glass sculpture, “Freedom,” for second-place honors.

“My occupation has continued to challenge my creativity by pushing me to design and create one-of-a-kind art displays for over 20 years,” said Stokes, owner of The Golden Frame at 509 E. Voorhees St. in Terre Haute.

Stokes also is president of River City Art Association, serves on the board of directors of Terre Haute South Rotary, is lobby gallery director for Community Theatre of Terre Haute and is a member of Watermark Artist Collective, Arts Illiana, Wabash Valley Art Guild, Gaslight Art Colony in Marshall Ill., and Bicentennial Art Center and Museum in Paris, Ill.
