Judge finds ‘ah, ha’ moments in students’ winning art

News Release

TERRE HAUTE — The Swope Art Museum’s 46th Annual Student Art Exhibition runs from April 6 to May 11.

A public reception is scheduled for 1 p.m. from 3 p.m. April 13, with the high school award presentation at 2:15 p.m. The Swope is at 25 S. Seventh St.

The student exhibition, made possible by Old National Bank, showcases work from local school art programs ranging from kindergarten through high school.

Begun in 1967, under the leadership of Swope director Howard E. Wooden in cooperation with the Vigo County School system, the exhibition has grown to include surrounding counties at the high school level. The student art exhibition offers students a rare opportunity to see their work alongside the great American artists represented in the museum’s collection.

Hundreds of students from 35 elementary, middle and high schools are represented in the exhibition. Elementary and middle school teachers select what will be shown, while the high school section was judged by LuAnn Lamie, a working artist and award-winning teacher. Lamie teaches art at Jefferson High School in Lafayette.

“As a teacher, I enjoy the pleasure of observing students having that ‘Ah ha’ moment after creating art from a new material or an observation,” Ms. Lamie said.

“I felt there were a variety of levels of expertise and of work entered by the area high schools,” she said after her judging. “I usually refer to the elements and principles of design when judging student work. I also look for original subject matter, dialogue with the viewer, and ‘mark making’ in the piece is very important to me. I loved the excellent craftsmanship and whimsy of the best of show piece — Aubrey Clark’s ‘Tipping Point.’”

Lamie selected 74 works of art from 210 high school submissions. From those, she chose those listed below to receive awards.

While the exhibition is on view, all of the fifth-graders in Vigo County will participate in tours led by a corps of volunteer docents. Tours for the fifth-grade are made possible by Terre Haute Savings Bank.
