ISU, Arts Illiana present photo competition on aging through Feb. 13

Indiana State University and Arts Illiana are seeking entries for an “Aging in the Wabash Valley” photo competition, designed to encourage the community to think about aging in a new way.

Contestants should submit images around the theme of aging in the Wabash Valley. Winning entries will be framed for display in the Arena Building on the ISU campus and at other local venues upon request.

The contest is inspired by Dr. Jeffrey M. Levine’s “Aging Across America,” a photography exhibition that portrays images of adults aged 60 and older, which is the fastest growing segment of the population but also the least pictured in the media. Levine’s work will be on display in the Vigo County Public Library in February and at Indiana State in the Hulman Memorial Student Union Art Gallery Lounge in March. In this exhibit, Levine explores human aging from the perspective of a medical doctor who specializes in geriatrics.

There will be a reception at the Vigo Library from 6 to 7 p.m. on Feb. 7 as part of Downtown Terre Haute’s First Friday. Carolyn Wilson will provide a presentation on her travels to New York, “My Addiction to New York City: People, Places, and Things — A Story through Photographs.”

Levine will be in Terre Haute from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on March 27 to give a lecture and  celebrate the announcement of the winners of the “Aging in the Wabash Valley” competition. He will also reveal the framed work during a reception at the ISU Student Union Art Gallery.

Levine’s award-winning photographs have been shown in galleries from coast to coast. A board-certified internist and geriatrician, he began taking pictures of older people during his geriatric fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center in the 1980s. Levine is an attending physician at Beth Israel Medical Center — Petrie Division in Manhattan and lives in New York City.

Photo competition entries should be mailed to Arts Illiana, 23 N. Sixth St., Terre Haute, IN 47807, care of the “Aging in the Wabash Valley” photo competition. Entries should be postmarked by Feb. 13, and the winners will be announced in March. To enter, include a description of your work in 100 words or less; a ready-to-frame, high-quality print, no larger than 14- by 22-inches; and a completed entry form. There are separate categories for amateur and professional photographers. For more information and to obtain an entry form contact Tina Kruger at

Sponsors of the contest include ISU’s Department of Applied Health Sciences; College of Nursing, Health, and Human Services; and College of Arts and Sciences; the Community School of the Arts; the Golden Frame; Arts Illiana; and the Hulman Memorial Student Union.
