Historical museum plans May 18 old-fashioned church picnic

In the days before hectic schedules, Crock-Pots and drive-thru dinners, the church picnic was a special Sunday afternoon time of fellowship and fun. This Sunday, the Vigo County Historical Society and Museum will host a revival of this family favorite from a simpler time with an old-fashioned church picnic from 1 to 4 p.m. on the museum lawn at 1411 S. Sixth St.

The event is in conjunction with the museum’s summer exhibit, “That Old-Time Religion,” which highlights the history of area churches and the contributions of people of faith in Vigo County.

People of all ages are invited to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy a taste of simpler times at this free event. Live music, games and fellowship will give visitors a glimpse back to the time when the church picnic was the highlight of every summer.

“The church picnic was a time to share food and fun, and to grow friendships beyond the walls of the church," said Susan Tingley, the organization’s development director.

Entertainment will be provided by a quartet from the Banks of the Wabash Chorus and The Coon Holler Kids. Area church ladies will provide crowd-pleasing homemade desserts, available for purchase.

Congregations are encouraged to gather their churches’ unique histories, including narrative accounts, historical photos or community involvement to be included in the museum’s archives.

"When the museum staff was planning the current exhibit, we talked about how the local church histories encompassed so much more than just the buildings,” Tingley said. “The congregations played a huge role in shaping our community.”

The Vigo County Historical Society hopes to honor the impact of area churches by giving them a place in the museum’s archives to preserve their histories for future generations.

Museum hours are 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
