Fall Choral Showcase at ISU Nov. 8

The Indiana State University School of Music will present the Fall Choral Showcase Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in the University Hall Theater.

The free concert will feature three choral ensembles.

The Concert Choir, under the direction of Scott Buchanan, will perform a diverse program of  performances that are both sacred and secular in nature. Composers include Brent Pierce, Doug Helvering, Joshua Shank, Dan Davison, Vaclovas Augustinas, Daniel Elder and Adolphus Hailstork. Larysa Tudorica will serve as the accompanist.

“This is going to be an exciting program, from the standpoint of diversity,” Buchanan said. “This may be the finest choir I have ever had here at Indiana State. They have been selected to perform at the state conference of the Indiana Music Educators Association in January, and we are going to do that exact program on this concert. There are a couple of very challenging pieces on this program, but the students have prepared very well.”

The Women’s Choir, under the direction of Colleen Davis, will perform works by Clement Jannequin, Robert Schumann and Rene Clausen, as well as traditional folksongs from the U.S. and Zambia. Andrea Marlowe serves as the accompanist for the ensemble and a variety of instrumentalists will be featured.

The Sycamore Singers will open the concert with a collection of vocal jazz charts by some of today’s better-known arrangers.

“Vocal jazz is becoming a very popular genre in today’s choral world,” Buchanan added. “We have jazz arrangements of movie themes (“Beverly Hills Cop”), spirituals (“Wade in the Water”), and an old favorite by Johnny Mercer (“Autumn Leaves”). It is amazing what these arrangers are doing to spice up familiar songs, seemingly from any musical style.”

Buchanan also conducts the Sycamore Singers and Tudorica is the accompanist.

To an untrained observer, a concert organ looks as complex as the controls of a jumbo jetliner.
