Living history tour of Vincennes cemetery Oct. 26 to tell tales from the departed

Some say the spirits in the cemetery are restless because they have a story to tell.

The Vincennes Historical & Antiquarian Society and George Rogers Clark National Historical Park, in cooperation with the Vincennes City Cemetery Department, will present a living history walking tour in Vincennes’ historic Greenlawn Cemetery on Oct. 26.

Volunteers dressed in period clothing will tell the tales of the famous and infamous souls that are buried within the cemetery’s bounds. As the oldest public cemetery in the state, Greenlawn, founded in 1788, is a treasure trove of stories from Vincennes’ past.

Rain or shine, tours will start every half hour from 4 to 8:30 p.m. and begin at the Vincennes Youth Soccer Field at South Sixth Street Road in Vincennes.

Tour space is limited and advance tickets are preferred. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased at Knox County Public Library or by calling 812-886-4380.

Proceeds will benefit projects and programs of the Vincennes Historical & Antiquarian Society. For more information, contact the Vincennes/Knox County Convention and Visitors Bureau at 812-886-0400 or visit the cemetery tour’s Facebook page at
