A free Paddlefest is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Oct. 5 on Lake Kickapoo in Shakamak State Park. This annual event will include a group paddle across the lake.
The event gives new paddlers the opportunity to learn how to paddle a kayak on flat water, and to enjoy the quiet beauty of the lake. Dinah Fuller will provide basic instruction on the safety and operational characteristics of kayaks. Experienced kayakers are welcome to join in the fun, and are encouraged to bring their own craft if they desire.
Kayaks provided for the event are “sit on top” kayaks, so participants should plan on getting slightly wet as they paddle. Lifejackets, kayaks and paddles are all provided, but paddlers should bring their own hats, sunscreen and change of clothes. They may also want to bring drinking water and a camera, as glimpses of wildlife are quite common during these events. Boat shoes are also recommended, but any water-type shoe will work.
Call the Shakamak Park office at 812-665-2158 for more information.
