Featured photographer Spidel now slows down to capture details others may miss

TERRE HAUTE — River City Art Association and the Vigo County Public Library are featuring photography by Josh Spidel throughout April in the library at Seventh and Poplar streets.

Spidel was born and raised in Terre Haute. During his early years of education he was home schooled. He continued his education at Terre Haute Christian School and Terre Haute North Vigo High School, graduating in 2000.

Spidel pursued a degree in technology at Indiana State University until May of 2002, when he was in a near-fatal motorcycle accident leaving him with memory deficits and paralysis of his right arm.

Following hospitalization and recovery in Indianapolis, Josh was forced to take a different course with his life.

Spidel, who discovered he enjoyed photography, now takes photos of nature, architecture and people. Because life has “slowed down,” he notices details that many often pass by. He uses a SLR Canon Rebel XS camera for digital photography.

Spidel has created note cards with his photography and framed pieces. For the past three years, he has produced yearbooks for local homeschoolers, taking pictures of the students and using his photography as backgrounds for the pages.

Spidel is a member of River City Art Association and has recently had some of his work on display at the Community Theatre in Terre Haute.

His photography on display at the library features collections of flowers, trees, animals (domestic and wild) and architecture.

“White Tiger” was taken at the Exotic Feline Rescue Center near Brazil, and “Dahlia” was captured in a hotel casino in Las Vegas.
