Rockville Library plans March 11 Big Read talk on ‘The Magnificient Ambersons’

Booth Tarkington’s “The Magnificient Ambersons” is the Big Read selection for the Wabash Valley in 2014. A book discussion led by Jim Hendrix will take place at 6:30 p.m. on March 11 at the Rockville Public Library.

“The Magnificient Ambersons” takes readers back in time to the early 1900s, when old ways were giving way to factories and automobiles. According to a press release: “Cities grow and change; people either adapt or are mown under. The book follows the fortunes of the Ambersons, a well-to-do Midwestern family, as social, historical and economic forces and personal choices take its members from wealthy and prominent to insignificient and nearly destitute. Most of the book is focused on George Minafer, the only third-generation member of the Ambersons. It is safe to say that George brings his downward mobility upon himself.”

The sponsors of the Big Read in the Wabash Valley are Sam’s Club, Vigo County Public Library and the Wabash Valley Community Foundation. The Big Read is designed to bring communities together to read, discuss and celebrate books and writers from American and world literature. The Rockville Public Library and Rockville Correctional Facility are participating in this free program with Vigo County Public Library. Free books are available at Rockville Public Library while supplies last.
