River City artist’s paintings on display through September

TERRE HAUTE — River City Art Association and the Vigo County Public Library are displaying work by Terre Haute artist Pamela Sorensen through September in the library at Seventh and Poplar streets.

“When I was six years old, I was painting on the beach,” Sorensen said, recalling her first instruction from a real artist. “I was in the sand and had oil paints all over me. There was an artist painting the ocean view. This artist took time to come over and help me make something on my paper. She helped me to see the many colors of the ocean and also how to use my fingers to spread the paint. I still like to put my fingers in the paint. I have loved most types of art ever since that experience.

“I have been blessed to have had teachers throughout my elementary, junior high and high school years who have been my mentors. I have painted with Julie Swingly for the past six years. She has been as inspiration to me.”

Sorensen recently moved to Terre Haute, and also acknowledges Terre Haute artist Julia London-Meddles for her willingness to help.

“I also like to design and sew many things, such as formal wear, interior design and upholstery.” Sorensen said. “I love to see nature’s colors, they inspire me in my painting. I am grateful to be blessed to see the beauty all around us.”

Since joining the River City Art Association Sorensen has displayed her paintings at Community Theatre of Terre Haute; Gaslight Art Colony in Marshall, Ill.; Vonda’s Garden in Terre Haute; and at the recent Wabash Valley Art Guild Plein Air event at Fairbanks Park. “I appreciate all the members of the art association who encourage me,” she said.

Sorensen and other RCAA members will help several Girl Scouts earn their painting and drawing badges at a workshop Saturday in the Girl Scouts Service Center at Fairbanks Park. The workshop will be followed by the RCAA’s second annual Fall Art Show from 5 to 8 p.m. with social hour from 5 to 6 and awards at 6.

Prospective RCAA members are invited to attend meetings on the second Tuesday of each month in the Vigo County Public Library.
