New look as Men of Note returns to stage Aug. 31

The Men of Note band will perform at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and Aug. 31, and at 5 p.m. Sept. 7, at Fairbanks Park. The performances are free. Rain dates are the following Sundays at the same times.

The Men of Note will return to play hits of the swing and big band eras. The band, that has been performing in the Wabash Valley for more than 50 years, will present a new look. The band will be performing regularly for the first time without its long-standing namesake, singer Claudia Fulwiler, who has retired and moved to Florida.

The core of the band remains the same with Dalvin Boone, trumpet; Norm Hanson, trombone; Matthew Balensuela, reeds; Mark Ford, bass; David Gibbs, piano; and Jim Thistle or Peter Ekstrom, drums. Longtime member George Graesch will be leading the band from the sidelines as he takes a break from this trumpet duties for a while. Nevertheless, the band will continue to play hits by such band leaders as Glenn Miller, Count Basie and Artie Shaw for listening and dancing.
