River City Art Association features Valley artist’s fused glass work

TERRE HAUTE — River City Art Association and the Vigo County Public Library are featuring fused glass artwork by Edith Acton of Terre Haute throughout June in the library at Seventh and Poplar streets.

Acton has tried ceramics, pottery, woodworking, weaving, painting, stained glass and many more mediums, only to learn and then turn away from them.

It wasn’t until about 10 years ago that she was introducted to fused glass. Since that time it has proven to be the most satisfactory of all, and there seems to be an endless amount of learning and creating to peak interest.

Fused glass is not a new art form, Acton said. It has been around since the Roman and Egyptian empires. Archeological finds are revealing the elaborate stones that kings and queens wore were pieces of colored glass that were cut and fused to create beautiful headdresses and breast plates. During the last couple of decades there has been a revival of the use of fused glass as an art medium.

Fused glass can be the easiest or the most complex of art forms. It involves taking a plain piece of glass and some smaller cut pieces then designing a pleasing visual form. After the design is satisfactory it is transformed by placing it into a kiln, applying intense heat, allowing it to soften and take a new shape. Finally, it morphs into a new object completely.

In her small basement studio surrounded by pieces of glass, Acton lets her imagination loose, and fused glass jewelry and wall hangings are brought to life.

Acton attended Otter Creek High School and Indiana State University and raised a family before retiring from the workforce to create artwork for display at various River City Art Association events.

More of Acton’s work will be featured in River City Art Association’s 2013 Year of the River art show “Rivers and Waters” scheduled Friday through June 22 in Vonda’s Garden Studio Event Space behind Heinl’s Flower Shop at 129 S. Seventh St. (See story below.)

Prospective RCAA members are invited to attend meetings on the second Tuesday of each month in the community room of the Vigo County Public Library. For more information, visit www.rivercityart.org or contact RCAA president Todd Stokes at 812-232-0048.
