Indiana Artisan works on display at Clabber Girl

TERRE HAUTE — Combining the strength of their individual artwork into exhibitions of exceptional depth, 29 Indiana Artisans have partnered on Indiana Artisan: Paintings and Drawings.

Ten Indiana Artisans have continued the statewide series as the Clabber Girl Gallery opened the exhibit on Tuesday. It will continue through May 30.

The Clabber Girl Gallery exhibit is the third of this partnership of Indiana’s contemporary masters. Following this exhibition, the artists and work will change, and completely new exhibits will open in other regional museums and exhibition galleries throughout the state.

More than 30 paintings and drawings in virtually every medium – including watercolor, acrylic, oil, pastel and graphite – will be exhibited at the Clabber Girl Gallery by Indiana Artisans Patricia Rhoden Bartels (Nashville), Rena Brouwer (Delphi), Mary Ann Davis (Indianapolis), Susan Downs (Spencer), Charlene George (Brookville), Brian Gordy (Muncie), Joyce K. Jensen (Zionsville), Alan Patrick (Albany), Lynn Retson (Porter) and Carrie Wild (Indianapolis).

According to a press release: “Indiana Artisan identifies, recognizes and promotes exceptional works of art and food created by Hoosier artists. It is an official, state-sanctioned designation for work of the highest caliber, with applications reviewed twice annually. Different panelists are engaged in each of the two annual reviews. Art panelists include artists, collectors, gallery owners and managers, folklorists, museum curators and directors, art educators, retailers, and others with an appreciation of fine art and craft.”

A work’s relationship to the Hoosier State is an important factor. The work of successful applicants becomes part of the Indiana Artisan brand and the artist can take advantage of the organization’s business development opportunities, the release said.

Vigo County is home to two Indiana Artisans – fiber artists Marilyn Oehler and Gretchen Kraut. They are among 249 artisans from 57 counties.

Indiana Artisan describes itself as “an economic development organization that leverages the work of the state’s exceptional art and food artisans, helping them expand their businesses and, in turn, support the economies of their communities.”

The group also works  works with eight “artisan trails,” encompassing 27 Indiana counties, including Clay, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Vermillion, and Vigo counties, which comprise the Rivers and Roads Artisan Trail.
