Halcyon Gallery featuring Terre Haute native Maraldo’s artwork

TERRE HAUTE — An exhibit titled “Words Flow Into Water” is scheduled to open at 7 p.m. Friday at the Halcyon Gallery, 25 S. Seventh St. The show continues through May 25.

The art by Mary Jo Maraldo, according to a press release “evokes an environment of flowing water and its aesthetic value. Silver texts written in English, cursively and vertically on black paper, suggest meandering streams, and their reflections on floor and ceiling give the impression of deep pools of water. The texts themselves have water as their theme and range from poetic description to scientific information. Water sounds and steel poles suggesting groups of trees interconnect the entire space.”

Maraldo, born and raised in Terre Haute, lived in Japan for eight years. She did numerous gallery installations of large sculptural Ikebana floral works at the Jacksonville Art Museum from 1982 to 1986, and then returned to Japan to study calligraphy.

In addition to exhibiting in many group shows, she has had solo shows of calligraphic works, both two- and three-dimensional, at museums and galleries in Jacksonville, Tallahassee and Sarasota, Fla.; Santa Fe, N.M., and Terre Haute.
