Monthly discussion series keeps focus on Wabash River

TERRE HAUTE — Four more “Art and River Chatter” conversation sessions have been scheduled in honor of the 2013 Year of the River celebration.

The informal conversations address public art and environmental issues related to the Wabash River. Two presenters will display images and offer ideas to start the conversation.

Dates and discussion topics include:

• July 25 — “Diversity rocks!” on the diversity of living forms in and on the Wabash River, both seen and unseen, and that not every micro-organism is dangerous. Presenters: Carissa Lovett, Dobbs Park Nature Center, and Jeffery Stone, Indiana State University Department of Earth and Environmental Systems.

• Aug. 22 — “Clean Up Your Act,” on co-existing with support systems (farming, heating, power, waste disposal, industry) and still protecting the area’s most important natural resource, the Wabash River. Presenters: Dennis Evers, Meridian Bioenergy and Meridian Biotech, and Brad Smith, Indiana Nature Conservancy.

• Sept. 26 — “What do you Mean, Live with the River?” on Riverscape’s approach to development along the Wabash; how other cities are becoming environmentally responsible while also developing their river areas for the public to live, shop, play; and how can we become a bright model for a river city of our size. Presenters: Fred Nation, Riverscape, and Jane Santucci, Our Green Valley Alliance for Sustainability.

• Oct. 24 — “What does art have to do with rivers? Part III,” on artists who found inspiration from the world’s waterways through painting and sculpture, imagery from historical works to the present. Presenters: Marianne Richter, Swope Art Museum, and Michael Tingley, artist.
