Valley artists taking part in ‘First Brush of Spring’ at New Harmony

Julia London-Meddles of Terre Haute and Wyatt LeGrand of Bloomfield are scheduled to join about 200 artists at the 15th annual “First Brush of Spring,” a popular Plein Air (outdoor) Paint Out event scheduled today through Saturday in New Harmony.

At the Paint Out event, artists from throughout the U.S. attempt to capture on canvas the springtime beauty of southern Indiana and New Harmony’s quaint, historic nature.

Artists of all ages and artistic ability have been known to set up their canvas and easels around town.

Artists will be open to answering visitors’ questions about the creative process and their individual techniques.

In its second year, the “Quick Draw” will take place today. Artists are invited to bring a blank canvas, have it stamped and get set up to participate by 5 p.m. at the Holy Angels Community Center. Artists must keep their canvases blank until a signal is given for them to begin drawing. Quick Draw paintings must be completed within two hours.

Entries will be judged at 7 p.m., and awards will be given at a reception to immediately follow.

The “First Brush of Spring” art sale is scheduled 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday at Ribeyre Center on South Main Street in New Harmony.

The art sale will offer the public an opportunity to view and buy art created at the Paint Out, along with other pieces the artists bring.

Saturday activities close with the “First Brush of Spring” awards presentations at 2:30 p.m. in front of Holy Angels Community Center on South Main Street.

The “First Brush of Spring” is sponsored by the Hoosier Salon (Indianapolis), the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association, and the New Harmony Artist Guild.

For more information or to participate, contact gallery director Maggie Rapp, 812-459-9851, at the Hoosier Salon Gallery or register at www.hoosiersalon.org.
