Swope First Friday on May 3 to feature ISU group, student art, Hopper painting

TERRE HAUTE — At the Swope Art Museum’s next First Friday, on May 3, it plans to welcome members of the Indiana State University Community School of the Arts and say a brief farewell to a famous painting.

The museum’s 46th Annual Student Art Exhibition, made possible by Old National Bank, also will be on view.

Students in Tim Doyle’s Guitar Club from the ISU Community School of the Arts will perform at 7 p.m. At 8 p.m., students, staff and administrators from the ISU Community School of the Arts will join in games focused on art trivia and improvisation. This year’s games will feature water themes in continuation of 2013 Year of the River celebrations.

The full First Friday event runs from 6 to 9 p.m., is free and open to the public and features an hors d’oeuvres table and cash bar.

A famous painting, “Route 6, Eastham” by Edward Hopper, will be on display before it is loaned to a national traveling exhibition, “Hopper Drawing,” organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art.

“Hopper Drawing” will examine Hopper’s creative process by pairing preparatory drawings with their finished paintings. The exhibition is scheduled to open at the Whitney in New York City on May 23 before continuing to the Dallas Museum of Art and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.

Open and free to the public since 1942, the Swope Art Museum is known for housing one of the Midwest’s premier collections of American painting, sculpture and works on paper. Hopper, Andy Warhol, Thomas Hart Benton, Grant Wood, Charles Burchfield, George Bellows, George Luks, John Sloan, Mary Fairchild MacMonnies, Harriet Frishmuth, Frederick MacMonnies, Anna Hyatt Huntington and Robert Rauschenberg are all represented in the Swope’s collection, which spans the 19th century to the present.
