Newly inspired artist earns Guild’s approval

TERRE HAUTE — Kathy M. Matlock, artist of the month for April by the Wabash Valley Art Guild, was born and raised in Sullivan, has lived various places, but has recently returned from Oregon.

She had been interested in art for years, but after a chance meeting with fellow artist, Eloise Lovell, “I have been inspired to expand my horizons,” she said. “It is a wonderful new world, and I cannot imagine not having art in my life now.”

Matlock works mainly with acrylic, but she has been expanding into graphite and watercolor. She has selected six of her recent paintings to hang at Vigo County Public Library through April.

Most of her works so far — such as “Porky Pine” and “Fat, Little Guy,” a perky bluebird — have concentrated on nature,

“Any semi-furry animal brings out the artist in me,” she is quoted as saying in a news release. “I take it as a challenge. Porcupines really have a lot of quills,” she said.

After she finished painting a collie, “Always Eager,” and her cat, “Buttercup,”  Matlock was inspired to do commissioned pet portraits. “These bring joy to me and their owners,” she said.

A colorful floral scene, “Nasturtiums,” and a farm scene breaking into spring aptly called “Spring Hope,” round out the exhibit.

Matlock joined the Wabash Valley Art Guild in 2012. Matlock has participated in several shows and exhibitions this past year and currently has several paintings on display at the Sullivan Area Art Guild Gallery, where she also has a membership.

“I would encourage anyone and everyone to pursue their interest in art,” she said. “There are so many with hidden and untapped talents who only need a slight nudge to realize the joys of creating. The process of creation can be challenging, but the feeling of accomplishment with the finished product is worth the effort. Showing and sharing your work is the ultimate conclusion,” Matlock said. “It is such a joy to explore and create in the world of art.”

Matlock’s artwork can be seen at the newly opened emporium, The Haystack, in Graysville; at the Ivy Tech Campus in Sullivan; andat  the newly opened Sullivan Area Art Guild Gallery in Sullivan. Additional works can be seen on her Facebook page, “Art by Kathy M. Matlock.”

Matlock can be contacted through the Wabash Valley Art Guild, at 812-394-2353 or kmatlock56@gmail.com. She is planning to exhibit at the Wabash Valley Art Guild Spring Show at the Honey Creek Mall Friday through Sunday.
