Art Guild features watercolor artist at library during May

TERRE HAUTE — Artist Roger King, a recent addition to the Wabash Valley Art Guild, is now featured at the Vigo County Public Library as “Artist of the Month.”

His work will be displayed throughout the month of May. King, a native of West Virginia, attended West Virginia University majoring in fine arts, before transferring to the Art Institute of Pittsburgh to pursue a degree in interior design. Upon completion of his studies, King moved to Phoenix, Ariz., where he became an active and recognized member of the art scene. He was involved in the National Society of Interior Designs, American Interior Designs, Arizona Watercolor Association and the Arizona Artist Guild — all of which are juried organizations. He has won several awards over his career, including many “best of show” and purchase awards. His work has been sold in numerous galleries across the country.

King’s medium of choice is watercolor. Upon conceiving an idea, he builds on it primarily from his own imagination, while using photographs as aids. His subject matter is diverse, ranging from still life to floral themes, and includes scenes from the Southwest where he lived. He is particularly known for his complex treatment of cathedral architecture and restaurant scenes, often using three-point perspective. These paintings usually contain people as additional subjects, projecting the scale of the buildings. King is attracted to vibrant colors. He does not pre-mix his paints, preferring to apply them directly to the surface, which gives his art pureness and looseness.

In addition to creating art, King has a passion for sharing his knowledge and techniques. He has taught painting techniques on television in West Virginia and Arizona, and has given private lessons for many years. He has also hosted seminars on art in Arizona, New Mexico, and Arkansas.

King’s painting currently on display at the library is titled “St. Mark’s Cathedral.” The artist says that this was a challenging watercolor creation due to its complex design. He was inspired and intrigued by the play of light, the intricate details of the cathedral, and the action of the piazza. Other paintings by King can be seen at the Wabash Valley Art Guild’s annual Spring Show featuring the works of several artists, at the Honey Creek Mall from Friday through Sunday, during mall hours.
