Swope encourages public to honor heroes

Special to the Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE While the exhibition “Terre Haute Heroes Project: Photographs by Bill Elmore” is on view at the Swope Art Museum, local residents are encouraged to honor their own personal community heroes.

For a donation of $10, $20 or $40, visitors can have a tribute to their hero on the walls of the museum that lists their name and how they have contributed to the community.

Each tribute will be shown in its own mat provided by Todd Stokes of the Golden Frame.

The mats can be personalized with photographs, original art or other information if the donor wishes to take a mat home and create a specific tribute for their hero. At the end of the exhibition, all the tributes will be returned to the hero or person who made the tribute.

Elmore’s work is on display in the museum from Oct. 17 to Jan. 3.

The display features select images from an ongoing project by Elmore that documents the work of local people who serve with the police and fire departments.

Elmore works as a studio and commercial photographer. He spent four years in Vietnam as a Navy photographer (one of his photographs graces the cover of a 1975 Time Magazine).

For the current series, Elmore already has spent several years following and documenting our local emergency responders as they carry out their harrowing jobs.

Terre Haute Heroes Project: Photographs by Bill Elmore is sponsored by Garmong Construction and Baesler’s Market. The exhibition opening reception is 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 17. At 5:30, Patron Level members of the museum can enjoy a special Prosecco toast in honor of the Al Pounders Italian landscapes, plus a sneak peak of both exhibitions.

The exhibition “Umbria from the Eye of Al Pounders” also runs Oct. 17 through Jan. 3.

A Brown Bag Lunch & Learn is noon to 1 p.m. Nov. 12 with Jahn Enlund, partner of Elmore.

He will discuss the project and inspiration for the work. Reserve a boxed lunch provided by Boo’s Crossroads Café for $7 by calling (812) 238-1676 by Nov. 10, or bring your own. Otherwise, no reservation required.

From 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 5 is “First Friday: Italian Holiday.” Visit the museum’s galleries during Downtown Terre Haute’s annual Holiday Fest. Visitors can enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar, plus create a holiday ornament inspired by the work of Al Pounders.

At 5:30 p.m. is Swope Book Club: “The Lost Painting: The Quest for a Caravaggio Masterpiece,” by Jonathan Harr

At 6:30 p.m. is a gallery walk and talk by Al Pounders. His paintings are sponsored by Old National Bank.

The Swope is at 25 S. Seventh St., (812) 238-1676, www.swope.org.

Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; noon to 5 p.m. Saturday; and closed Sunday and Monday.

Admission is free.
