Art exhibition showcases work of Atlanta artist Scott Ingram

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana State University Art Gallery will showcase the recent works of Atlanta-based artist Scott Ingram in the exhibition “Building Futures,” running through Nov. 7.

“Building Futures” takes its cue from mid-century design ideologies crafted in the post World War II era. In this solo exhibition, Ingram rediscovers and appropriates modernist architecture using everyday materials to construct his works. He draws specifically from a series of Case Study Houses in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1962, including designs by Charles and Ray Eames, Richard Neutra, Pierre Koenig and Eero Saarinen.

Media, or better put, material is selected on the basis of its accessibility and historical reference, consisting primarily of commercial building supplies like wood, steel, enamel, concrete and glass. The approach is minimal but Ingram alters and inverts this design history to the great advantage of the resulting works. The investigations acknowledge his predecessors, Barnett Newman, Donald Judd, Ed Ruscha, Andy Warhol and Richard Serra.

The results do not fit easily in one genre — customarily labeled as painting, drawing or sculpture — but instead the range of materials work together to break the boundaries between media specific fields.

Ingram was born in 1968 in Drumright, Okla., and currently resides in Atlanta. In 2007, Ingram was featured as a “Critic’s Pick” in Art Forum, an internationally recognized art journal. He is represented by SOLOMON Projects in Atlanta, which has graciously shared images and didactic materials in the planning of this exhibition.

The University Art Gallery is in the Center for Performing and Fine Arts located at the corner of Seventh and Chestnut Streets. The Gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. All gallery events are free and open to the public and the facility is wheelchair-accessible.
