Halcyon features works of Bradfield, Vicars-Pugh in October

TERRE HAUTE Rod Bradfield and Crystal Vicars-Pugh are the featured artists at the Halcyon Contemporary Art Gallery from Wednesday through Oct.30.

The public is invited to meet the artists at the opening reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 3.

Bradfield, a local artist and art-educator, has been active in the visual arts for more than 40 years.

He has shown his work locally and nationally and has mastered the techniques of drawing, painting and sculpture. In his newest body of work he is working in ceramics, epoxy and acrylic while exploring the geometric shape.

Vicars-Pugh is pursuing a master’s degree at Indiana State University in painting. Her current series of large-scale paintings abstractly narrate the evolution of spring turning into summer.

Both Bradfield’s sculptures and Vicars-Pugh’s paintings are non-representational and explore form, pattern, color and surface. The sculptures are tangible, geometric objects, focusing on the shape of the tetrahedron, morphing into either rock-like shapes or hard-edge mechanical forms. In contrast, Vicars-Pugh’s paintings suggest the ephemeral organic and explore the powerful force of Mother Nature. Thematically, both bodies of work cast a quality of mystery and invite the viewer to explore both the numinous earthbound and the preternatural unknown.

Halcyon sits beside the Swope Art Museum at 25 S. Seventh St. Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, or by appointment. For more information, call (812) 841-2884 or visit www.artathalcyon.com.

All Halcyon events are free and open to the public.
