TERRE HAUTE Dorothy Jerse looks back at local history from 10, 25 and 50 years ago as reported in the Tribune and Tibune-Star.

1998

• Betty Poindexter, Vigo County Superintendent of Schools in office since July 1, 1997 announced she would resign as of June 30.

• Indianapolis-based Emmis Broadcasting purchased WTHI-TV, WTHI-AM, WTHI-FM and WWVR-FM in Terre Haute and WFTX-TV in Ft. Myers, Fla., from Wabash Valley Broadcasting Co., a subsidiary of Hulman & Co.

• Only about 25 of the 120 candidates at the county level were women in the upcoming Wabash Valley primary elections. James L. McDowell, Indiana State University political science professor, said, “If you look across the country, the white middle-age male dominates politics.”

• Two Terre Haute South Vigo High School athletes were named Indiana basketball All-Stars: Courtney Risinger to the girls team and Maynard Lewis to the boys team. Jim Jones, Terre Haute North Vigo High School, was named coach of the Indiana All-Stars boys team.

• The Welcome Club met at Louise’s Restaurant, 1840 S. Third St., and heard Dr. Bart Anderson discuss “Stress Management.”

1983

• High interest rates and the poor economy were given as reasons for closing the IGA stores at Southland, K-Mart Plaza, West Terre Haute and Brazil. Wetterau Food, Bloomington, had purchased the stores from John Abrell about two years before.

• Robert Causey, vice president A. G. Edwards & Sons Inc., believed unemployment and the huge government deficit must be reduced along with more consumer spending to end the current recession.

• Michael Barnes, Terre Haute economic development administrator, and Ross Hedges, president Terre Haute Area Chamber of Commerce, attended the National Association of Corporate Real Estate Executives exposition in Phoenix to help promote Terre Haute.

• The boards of the Southwest Parke Community School Corp. and Turkey Run Community School Corp. both voted against a proposed merger of Parke County high schools.

• The number of players in the Terre Haute Youth Soccer League had increased from about 60 to 600 in five years.

• Terre Haute received 13 mentions in the new state promotional booklet “Wander Indiana.”

1958

• Contracts were awarded by Terre Haute Elks City Lodge No. 86 for construction of the new swimmming pool at the Elks Fort Harrison Country Club. Ray Fischer was the exalted ruler.

• General Telephone honored O. B. Gordon for 40 years and W. Leonard Tichenor for 30 years of service at a dinner at the Deming Hotel.

• The Veterans Administration removed the 2 percent down payment requirement on VA-guaranteed home loans to help fight the recession.

• It was opening night at the newly remodeled “SPOT” on North Eighth Street. The Spot Trio featured Boone Dunbar vocal and drums, Harry Jewell piano and Johnny Dodds trumpet.

n Dr. E. J. Hunt was named Life Master, the highest rank awarded by the American Contract Bridge League.
