Shanks, chapel outside.jpg

Inspired: The Flight 93 Memorial Chapel near Shanksville, Pa., was the idea of Bishop Alphonse Mascherino, a Catholic priest from Somerset County. He sold antiques he’d collected to raise funds to buy the then-vacant church after the crash on 9/11. Through additional donations of money and labor, the building was completed in time for a ceremony on the first anniversary in 2002. More than 300,000 people have visited the chapel since then.
