TERRE HAUTE —
Indiana State junior and Terre Haute North High School graduate Nick Ciolli has been named the top prospect of the Alaska Baseball League and an Alaska Baseball League first-team all-star.
Ciolli is nearing the end of his second summer playing for the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks.
“That doesn’t surprise me,” Lindsey Meggs, Indiana State baseball coach said. “Nick has all the tools that you look for in the pros. He can hit, hit with power, run and throw. We expect him to have a big year in 2009.”
The Sycamore outfielder is the second-leading hitter on the Goldpanners this season with a .348 average. He has played in all 35 games and was 10 of 12 in stolen bases with nine doubles and 11 RBIs.
“I really have been having a lot of fun,” Ciolli said. “The awards were just announced a couple of days ago and I was excited to be named the top prospect in the league.”
Ciolli has also been picked up by the Peninsula Oilers, also of the Alaska Baseball League, and will join them in Wichita, Kan. The Oilers are playing in the National Baseball Congress World Series and open up against the San Diego Force on Sunday.
