ISU baseball falls Friday in 12, gets rained out Saturday

Tribune-Star staff report

Omaha, Neb. The Indiana State Sycamores fell victim to late game heroics for the eighth time this season as the Creighton Bluejays pushed over a run in the bottom of the 12th inning to edge the Sycamores 6-5 Friday night.

Creighton’s Lam walked to open the 12th inning for the Bluejays and Knight was out on a sacrifice bunt that moved Lam to second. Soto struck out swinging for the second out but then Ruff walked. That brought up Winkelman who hit a walk-off single to right center that scored Lam with the winning run.

Indiana State falls to 14-30 overall and 6-13 in the Missouri Valley Conference with the loss. The Sycamores and Bluejays (31-17 overall and 14-8 in the MVC) were rained out Saturday and will play a doubleheader today.

The Sycamores got off to a good start as Ryan Strausborger opened the game with a leadoff triple to right center, scoring the first run when Chris Schmidt grounded out to second. ISU got another run after Brady Shoemaker reached on an error and scored on a Nick Ciolli double to left center.

Creighton responded to tie the score at two in the bottom of the first.

• Schmidt honored — Indiana State senior center fielder Chris Schmidt has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Friday.

Schmidt is now eligible for the Academic All-America voting, which will be held next week.

Bradley’s Eitan Barbalat and Eastern Illinois’ Brian Morrell were named to the first team as pitchers. The infield consists of Notre Dame’s Brett Lilley, Illinois’ Ryan Hastings, Minnesota’s Tom Steidl, Northwestern’s Jake Goebbert and Notre Dame’s Sean Gaston as catcher. Joining Schmidt in the outfield is Minnesota’s Matt Nohelty and Northwestern’s Mike Kalina. The designated hitter is Illinois’ Daniel Webb.

Schmidt leads the Sycamores with a .362 batting average and a 3.92 grade-point average in the classroom studying computer hardware technology.
